Her crime was to try and cast a spell on her daughter to turn her hands and feet into horseshoes. She did this because they needed a horse but could not afford one. The evidence was that her daughter had deformed hands and feet.


Her daughter was also tried, but found innocent.


Janet Horne was executed at Dornoch in Sutherland by being burnt in a barrel of tar.

Her last words were "It's a bonnie fire" as she warmed her hands at the barrel!


Her innocence was proved several years later when her granddaughter was born with the same genetic deformity to her hands and feet.
