Why Is It Unlucky To Spill Salt?

Superstitious people think it is unlucky to spill salt because during the Last Supper Judas Iscariot, who later betrayed Jesus, spilled salt. The Romans started this superstition.

The superstition also sees its origins from the days when salt was a precious commodity and to spill it was a waste. People were often paid in salt.

To divert the bad luck people would throw the salt on open fires whilst wishing ill luck on an enemy. Now that fewer people have coal, peat and wooden fires people divert the bad luck by throwing a small amount of the spilled salt over their left shoulder. The devil is supposed to appear at people's left shoulders. Many believe that no words should be spoken whilst doing these actions.
