Spitfire Pilot World War Two
Jackie Mann was a Royal Air Force (RAF) Squadron Leader Pilot flying Spitfires during the
Second World War. He fought in the Battle of Britain.
He sustained serious burns when his Spitfire was shot down.
Beirut Hostage
Jackie Mann and his wife Sunnie moved to Lebanon in 1946 and lived there for over 40
years until Jackie was kidnapped on the 13th May 1989 by the pro-Iranian Shi'ite Muslim
militants Hezbollah party Armed Struggle Cells in the capital Beirut in 1989 after a
visit to his bank.

Jackie Mann was released on September 24th 1991. He had spent time with other UK and Irish
hostages journalist John McCarthy, church envoy Terry Waite and author Brian Keenan.
His health suffered greatly during captivity and he never really recovered. He had
been kept for prolonged periods of solitary confinement, sometimes in chains. He had lost over
18 kilograms and suffered from heart and lung problems.

Mrs Mann and Jackie settled in Greek Southern Cyprus in the capital Nicosia after his
release.
