Gwen Berryman - Doris Archer


Gwen Berryman was born in Wolverhampton in 1903.

She is most famous for playing the character Doris Archer in BBC Radio 4 Soap Opera Series The Archers. The programme started on the BBC Light Programme then the BBC Home Service before moving to BBC Radio Four.

Gwen Berryman was the only actress to play the part and was first heard in 1951 and played the part until the death of Doris Archer in 1980.

The maiden name of Doris Archer was Forrest. She was born in Ambridge on the 11th July 1900. Her father was William Forrest and her mother was called Lisa. Her brother was Tom Forrest.

She married Dan Archer on the 17th December 1921 and they had three children called Philip (Phil) Christine and John (nicknamed Jack).

Gwen Berryman wrote two books:

In later life Gwen suffered from Arthritis.

Gwen Berryman died on the 20th December 1983.

There is a blue plaque commemorating her life at the house she lived in at 123 Goldthorn Hill, Wolverhampton. It is sponsored by The BBC, Pebble Mill, Birmingham. It was erected in 1997.
