Superstitious people consider Friday The Thirteenth to be a day of bad luck. There is no rational reason for this superstition, though it is thought that the combination of Friday and the 13th together bring double ill luck.


The medical and scientific name for people who have a deep, irrational and morbid fear of Friday the Thirteenth is Paraskavedekatriaphobia or Friggatriskaidekaphobia. The fear of the number 13 is called Triskaidekaphobia.

Friday The 13th Thirteen is also known as the The Devil's Dozen.

There were 13 people sat at the Last Supper where Jesus Christ and his twelve disciples ate a meal together before Christ was betrayed by Judas Iscariot - an act which led to the crucifixion of Christ.

Muslims consider it unlucky for 13 people to sit at the same table and have dinner - they think that if this is done that all will die within the year.

There are said to be 13 witches in a coven.

People with 13 letters in their name are said to have the Devil's luck.

In olden days in the UK execution by hanging usually took place on a Friday.

Legend has it that Adam was tempted by Eve to eat the forbidden fruit of the apple on a Friday.

The Great Flood of the Old Testament when Noah built the Ark started on a Friday.

Other Bible references to Friday being a bad day include God tongue tying the builders of the Tower of Babel and the Temple of Solomon was destroyed on a Friday.
