In the 1840s the first batch of commercially produced Valentine Day cards were made by American
Esther A. Howland from scraps (colourful pictures), ribbons and lace.
The oldest surviving Valentine poem was written by Charles the Duke of Orleans. He wrote it in 1425 to his wife
during his imprisonment in the Tower of London after being captured at the Battle of Agincourt. It is kept at
the British Library in London, England, UK.
The first recorded Valentine letter sent by a member of the Royal Family was from King Henry V
to Catherine of Valois. It was composed by a writer called John Lydgate.
