The first female Prime Minister in the World was Sirimavo Bandaranaike in Sri Lanka (then known as Ceylon) on the 20 July 1960. She was elected after the death of her Prime Minister husband Solomon Bandaranaike. He was assassinated in 1959 by a Buddhist Monk. Solomon Bandaranaike was the founder of the Sri Lankan Freedom Party.

Sirimavo Bandaranaike's birth name was Sirimavo Ratwatte and she was born on 17 April 1916.


Sirimavo Bandaranaike Nickname


She was nicknamed the Weeping Widow because she would often burst into tears during her election campaign.


Political Career Of Sirimavo Bandaranaike


Sirimavo Bandaranaike was defeated in 1964 by a confidence vote prior to the general election.

She returned to power in 1970 and in 1972 she declared the Country a Republic and changed the name from Ceylon to Sri Lanka. She stayed in power until 1980.

In 1994 Chandrika Kumaratunga, her daughter, became president of Sri Lanka. By this time the Prime Ministerial role had become ceremonial and she appointed her mother to this position. She remained in the postition until 10 August 2000.


Death Of Sirimavo Bandaranaike

Sirimavo Bandaranaike died on the 10 October 2000 at the age of 84. She had been driving home after voting at the general elections and suffered a heart attack.
